Artist Statement

I explore connections between the mind and body through biomorphic abstraction of organ-like figures. As an individual living with chronic illness, it has become clear how thought patterns can impact one's physical well-being and how physical limitations can frame one's mindset. Although often garnered as separate, the mind and body hold a powerful connection. Thoughts unconsciously manifest into reality, creating a cycle. My work utilizes this cycle through the emotive language of art, transferring thoughts into the physical form of painting.

I allow myself to embrace the unplanned moments and unexpected quirks of each painting. There is something very human about embracing “imperfections” through introspection. Through unexpected moments, I connect with the viewer and challenge them to deepen their expressions of self and vulnerability. The viewer is called to pause and sit with each form to fully understand each moment that contributes to the reality of the whole. This process creates a better understanding of oneself and how we connect with others. Heavy texture, brushstrokes, clashing techniques, and evidence of layering all add to the chaos within the forms attempt to stabilize themselves.

My intuitive approach allows for the forms to have a hand in creating themselves, fully fleshing out the feeling of the paintings. Color becomes an important contributor by displacing the organs from a visceral notion and instead allowing viewers to dissect each portion of the work. By showing these forms in a more whimsical light, the forms allow themselves to be seen for the complex weights they hold.

It's what's on the inside that matters; guts, butts, and persistent patterns of thought.
